PRP for Sexual Health, Urinary Incontinence & Lichen Sclerosus

(Vaginal Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP)

This service is now being offered at Meridian Medicine/Essential Wellness! What could be more natural than using your own immune system to stimulate tissue healing?

Many people are utilizing Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, for sports injuries and skin health, like the PRP Facial with SkinPen Micro-needling that we already offer at the clinic.  Did you know that this same power of the platelets to stimulate tissue healing, blood flow, nerve sensitivity, and collagen production can be harnessed for the vaginal tissue as well?

After a blood draw in the office, your physician will spin it down to harvest the platelet-rich plasma in our Progen PRP system, one of the only FDA-cleared PRP systems in the country.  After this, the PRP is then injected back into the damaged or underperforming tissue of the vaginal area, the location depending on what is being treated.

Sounds painful, but it’s really not that bad — and the results are worth it.

How Vaginal PRP Works

After the blood draw, your physician will numb up the area with a topical anesthetic so there is minimal discomfort.  We also recommend bringing your headphones so you can go to the ‘hot tub in your head’ while we prep the procedure.  The whole thing takes under an hour and has very little recovery time.

Who would want to consider this service? If you have:

  • Lichen Sclerosus – patients who suffer a painful tissue-damaging condition of the vulva and perineal area.

  • Vaginal Atrophy – patients who have already optimized the health of the tissue with topical hormones and still have dryness and atrophy.

  • Urinary Incontinence – patients who have done the physical therapy, do the hormones, and still have incontinence issues.

  • Sexual Dysfunction – patients who have difficulty achieving orgasm.

  • Episiotomy Scars – patients with continued pain after childbirth.

Not everyone is a candidate for Vaginal PRP, and there may be other less invasive options to try first – schedule a consult to explore your options for treatment.
